Here's a look back at the last week in Vestavia Hills High School sports.
BASKETBALL
The Vestavia Hills boys and girls basketball teams returned to the court last Wednesday and picked up a sweep of Hueytown.
The Lady Rebels cruised to an 89-38 victory. Four players scored in double figures for Vestavia, with Jill Gaylard and Ally Perry leading the way with 14 points apiece. Sarah Gordon poured in 13 points, while Anna Towry posted 12 points.
The boys team earned a 62-35 win as well. Jackson Weaver led the way for the Rebels, going for 17 points and 5 rebounds.
Vestavia Hills played again Friday, hosting and sweeping Homewood.
The Lady Rebels beat Homewood 56-25 in a strong showing. Gordon led the charge with 21 points, while Towry posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Grayson Hudgens added 9 points as well.
Vestavia’s boys outlasted Homewood 52-48. Win Miller went for 20 points, while Weaver added 14 points.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The Vestavia Hills indoor track and field team began the season at the Magic City Invitational last Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
For the girls, Claire Spooner was second in the 800-meter run and fourth in the 400-meter dash, Riley Zeanah was third in the 800 and 10th in the 400, Elizabeth Gannon finished fifth in the 1,600 and 10th in the 800, Kendall Feild ws fourth and Angela Hjelmeland was 10th in the 1,600, Reese Beckner was second, Emmelyne Bostic was fourth and Anna Kate Bailey was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, Alex Rountree finished seventh in triple jump and 10th in the long jump, Sarah Kate Misner placed third in the triple jump, and Addison Armstrong was fourth and Annemarie Merrill was eighth in the shot put.
On the boys side, Alex Leath won the 400 with a time of 50.80 seconds. Wilson Holt won the 1,600 in 4:37, Will Jordan won the 3,200 in 9:56, Chase Kaiser won the shot put with a throw of 45-4 and the 4x800-meter relay team won in 8:18. David Howard was second and Jackson Mize was third in the 800; Mize was third, James Bentley was fifth and Drew Morris finished eighth in the 1,600; Mitchell Schaaf was third in the 3,200; Robert Gwaltney finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles; Jack Stubbs was third and Nate Bradshaw was eighth in the long jump; Ben Wade placed seventh in triple jump; and Brady Ferrell placed fourth in pole vault. Henry Drew, Thomas Shoemaker and Thomas Ogletree were second through fourth in the shot put.
WRESTLING
The Vestavia Hills wrestling team fell in the Over the Mountain Duals last Tuesday, losing to Pelham 45-36 and to Spain Park 47-36.
Vestavia Hills sent teams to the Border Wars X in Florida and to the Saints Invitational in Mississippi over the weekend. The Rebels finished sixth in the Border Wars, as Charles Noto (113 pounds), Stone Phillips (120), Davis Reiff (126) and Austin Wilbanks (195) and Mitch Taylor (285) won their respective weight classes. Walker Hogue (138), Hastings Roberts (138), Andrew Sullivan (152) and Luke Dutton (182) each finished second. Bennett Ashley (132) and Owen Wilbanks (145) were each third.
In Mississippi, the Rebels fell to Brother Martin 73-3, lost to Vancleave 45-36, beat Starkville 60-18 and beat St. Patrick’s 60-18.
