Cahaba Heights Elementary
Fourth and fifth grade student leaders at Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights welcomed kindergarteners and new students back to school. Students were on hand to walk new students to class and help returning students find their way in the new and improved school building after undergoing significant summer construction.
The third grade students at Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights recently participated in the March Madness Reading bracket. The bracket is displayed in the third grade hall and consists of “Sweet 16” chapter books. The books represent various genres and reading levels. From classics such as Shiloh and Charlotte’s Web to the New York Times Bestseller, Wonder and Newberry Award Winner The One and Only Ivan. The voting works very similarly to the March Madness bracket. Students vote for their favorite book of each “game.”
In order to vote, they have to have read both books “playing” in a game. By April 6, the third grade will have voted for the 2015 VHECH Book of the Year. The goal is to read as many books across the bracket in order to experience a range of authors, genres, and stories. The tournament is creating excitement for reading not only in the third grade classes but across the entire school. Stay tuned for updates on which book will win Book of the Year at VHECH.
