Rocky Ridge Entertainment District map
The city of Vestavia Hills is considering whether to make the area outlined here into an entertainment district with looser open container regulations during certain hours.
The Rocky Ridge Arts & Entertainment Association will help kick off the summer this week with its inaugural First Friday event June 3. The Association, comprised of a group of community-spirited merchants and volunteers, will host the monthly series in the Rocky Ridge business district recently designated as an entertainment district.
From 5-8:30 p.m., attendees can expect an assortment of vendors including artists, craftsmen and area businesses. Bands, artist demonstrations, games, a kids’ zone, outdoor family movies, specialty foods and beverages are also on deck. Vendors will set up in the Rocky Ridge Square and the Rocky Ridge Plaza.
This year’s First Friday event dates include:
- June 3
- July 1
- Aug. 5
- Sept. 2
- Nov. 4
There will be no event scheduled for October due to the Vestavia Hills High School football schedule. A special Saturday event will be held June 25, as the city of Vestavia Hills sponsors a “Slide in the City” party beginning at 9 a.m. Music, vendors, food and a massive 1,000-foot waterslide will be set up on Lime Rock Road. The slide will run down the hill to where the road meets Morgan Drive.
First Friday parking, according to the event’s Facebook page, will be available at Vestavia Hills High School. A shuttle will transport patrons to and from the event from 4:30-8 p.m.
The 2016 First Friday vendor fees, according to the Association’s application, include either a $15 sidewalk space under the canopies of the shopping center or a $30 tent space around the perimeter of the area’s parking lot. A limited number of spaces for non-profits are available for $10 and $20 respectively.
In October, the Vestavia Hills City Council voted unanimously to establish the area as an entertainment district. Plans to capitalize on the new designation quickly began to take shape.
An entertainment district, as outlined by the council, permits that patrons can take an open alcoholic beverage from the restaurant where they bought it and drink it outdoors in the district, as long as the drink is in a specially marked cup and the patrons do not enter another restaurant licensed to sell alcohol.
