During a December Meeting, the City Council approved the reception of a FEMA flood mitigation assistance grant in the amount of $24,999.99. The grant will be used to develop a floodplain management plan for the City.
The plan will develop an overall strategy of programs, projects, and measures that will reduce the adverse impact of the flood hazard on the City. This plan will be specific to Vestavia Hills and will help departments better manage flood-related issues. A document that outlines the framework for mitigating existing flood hazards and preventing future flood hazard will be developed and will include input throughout the process by a team of City staff.
"We are pleased to receive this grant," City Manager Jeff Downes said. "The end results should be a document that should help with a comprehensive flood review for the city."
The council also improved an agreement with Schoel Consulting Engineers for consulting services for the plan. The consultant fee for assisting with the planning and preparation of the is equal to the 75% federal share ($25,000.00). No out of pocket expense from the City is expected for this project.
Also during the meeting, Downes announced that the bridge at McCallum Park has been installed and the trails and greenway project will be completed by the end of next week.
"People have said repeatedly they want more trails in Vestavia Hills," said Downes.
"This bridge was installed in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Foundation," said Councilman Steve Ammons. "It doesn't happen without citizens' help."
The next City Council meeting will be Monday, Dec. 22 at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
