Vestavia Hills resident and lawyer Bob Elliott announced his candidacy for city council Monday.
Elliott, who grew up in Vestavia and currently resides in the Cahabe Heights area, said he has not formally decided on what place on the council he will seek.
“I am running for city council seeking to serve this community which is experiencing exciting and complex opportunities for growth,” Elliott said in his emailed announcement. “As change occurs, it is important to have leaders who are connected to the members of the community and who seek productive solutions in a respectful and deliberate manner.”
Elliott ran in the 2012 municipal election, and though he was unsuccessful then, he said he learned a lot about city government and is excited to run again. He also said he hopes to get those who are less familiar with city government involved in this election.
“This is the most direct and immediate and effective and efficacious form of representative government,” he said. “Everything from the streets to the trash to emergency medical to of course the schools, everything that really makes up kind of how government interacts with people in daily life is mainly municipal, and it’s a shame that we don’t have more people directly involved in that process, and so that’s something I’m seeking to do this time, maybe more than I did last time.”
Elliott’s release and website state he graduated from the University of Alabama in 2008 with a law degree and an MBA, and started his own law firm in 2009. He has been a volunteer and board member with the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, has been involved with Leadership Vestavia Hills, the Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation Foundation and the Cahaba Heights Community Foundation.
Elliott said he lives with his small dog named Lolly, “as in Lolly-pop,” and enjoys playing classical guitar.
