Slide the City
Slide the City features a three-lane, 1,000-foot water slide.
This isn't your ordinary backyard Slip 'n Slide. Slide the City, a traveling company featuring a three-lane, 1,000-foot water slide, is coming to Vestavia Hills in June.
Slide the City arrives on June 25 and will have a block party beginning at 9 a.m. featuring music, vendors, food and the slide. The party and slide will be set up on Lime Rock Road, running down the hill to where the road meets Morgan Drive. Riders must be over five years old and taller than 46 inches.
City manager Jeff Downes said part of Lime Rock Road will be blocked off for the day, but drivers should still be able to use residential roads to reroute around the party. He said the city is also talking with all residents whose driveway access will be affected to make sure they're aware of what will happen that day. He said the slide will be in place until mid-evening.
Parking for the event will be at Vestavia Hills High School, and Downes said the city is working with the high school to ensure that the parking won't conflict with a repaving project planned for the lot. Vestavia Hills Police officers are making a security and traffic plan.
There is a limit of 5,000 tickets to be sold for the slide. Tickets can be bought for one slide, which are $10 each until May 20 and will increase in price as time goes on, eventually reaching $20 each the day of the event. Ticket purchasers must also select the two-hour window in which they wish to slide. A three-slide ticket can be bought for $20 or an all-day ticket for $40.
Each ticket comes with an entry wristband, drawstring bag and mouth guard. Participants must use an inflatable tube to slide. According to the Slide the City website, sliders can bring their own tube or purchase one there.
Vestavia Hills is one of 100 cities on the 2016 Slide the City tour, and the only one in the Birmingham area.Buy tickets and learn more about Slide the City here.
