BASKETBALL
Last Tuesday, the Vestavia Hills boys basketball team kept on winning, with a 70-55 triumph against Helena. Once again, Reese Gurner led the way with 19 points in the contest. Jude Cleary had a strong game as well, going for 16 points and 5 rebounds. Win Miller filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, 6 boards and 6 assists.
Emma Smith became the Vestavia Hills all-time leading scorer on Thursday, as she passed Vicki Vettenburg in the history books. Smith scored 14 points in the Lady Rebels 82-37 win over Grissom. Sarah Gordon led the team in scoring with 20 points. Anna Towry scored 11 and Jill Gaylard added 10 points to give Vestavia four scorers in double figures.
Both Vestavia teams remained unbeaten Friday night with wins over Homewood. The Lady Rebels dominated en route to a 67-21 victory. Gordon led the team with 15 points and Ally Smith scored 11. The boys picked up a 67-50 win, with Gurner going for 19 points. Cole Turner scored 13 points, while Miller posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Donte Bacchus led Homewood with 17 points in the contest.
WRESTLING
Last Tuesday, the Vestavia Hills wrestling team swept the Over the Mountain Duals. The Rebels defeated Gardendale 48-30 and beat Thompson 39-33. The following day, they knocked off Arab 51-22. Over the weekend, they finished ninth in the Chelsea Invitational. Andrew Sykes won in the 220-pound division.
The Rebels also won the Border Wars IX tournament in Florida. Stone Phillips, John Edwards and Mitch Taylor won in their weight classes, while Cale Tucker, Riggs Manown and Trey Saunders were runners-up.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Vestavia Hills swimming and diving teams competed in the state meet last weekend, with the boys finishing fifth in the Class 6A-7A division and the girls placing 16th.
