BASKETBALL
The Vestavia Hills girls basketball team saw a resurgent season come to a close on Wednesday night, as the Lady Rebels suffered a hard-fought 59-53 loss to Hewitt-Trussville in the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament. In the teams’ previous meetings in area play, Hewitt won by 35 and 18 points, but the Lady Rebels were in the game from beginning to end on Wednesday.
Hewitt held a 13-10 edge after a quarter of play, and Vestavia flipped that it into its own three-point lead, 28-25, at the half. Hewitt-Trussville held a slim 41-39 edge after the third quarter, but the Lady Rebels started the final period on an 8-2 run to give them a 47-43 lead. Hewitt responded with its own 9-2 run to reclaim the lead and held on with solid free throw shooting in the final moments.
Emma Smith led the team with 14 points, and Alison Stubbs added 13. The Lady Rebels finished the season with an 18-10 record, with both seniors Grace Uldrich and Courtney Milner making the all-area team.
The Vestavia Hills boys basketball team secured its berth in the regional tournament with its 72-56 win over Spain Park on Thursday night in the opening round of the area tournament. The game was tied 29-29 at halftime and was only a four-point contest heading into the final period, when Vestavia Hills pulled away. Luke Couch led the way for the Rebels with 22 points, while Paul Michael Hargrove posted 16 points and seven rebounds. Coleman Barranco added 12 points and an impressive eight assists, and Michael Vice also scored 12.
The Rebels fell to Mountain Brook 63-36 on Saturday night in the area final, but they will take their 20-10 overall record into the Class 7A Northwest Regional semifinal on Thursday. Vestavia Hills is set to take on Florence at 1:30 p.m. at Wallace State Community College.
WRESTLING
The Vestavia Hills wrestling team won the Class 7A North Super Section tournament over the weekend, with 13 wrestlers advancing to the state tournament this weekend. Ryan Summerlin (106 pounds), Christopher Hays (113), Bryant Segars (120), Leighton Reese (132), Nathaniel Nailen (138), Jack Lamey (145), John Edwards (152), Sam Willoughby (160), Peter Dazzio (170), Carter Gill (182), Rob Barrentine (195), Grant McLean (220) and Douglas Thompson (285) will all be in action at state.
