Vestavia Hills High School flexed its muscle on Tuesday night, sweeping a volleyball tri-match against Homewood and Briarwood at Homewood High School.
“I feel like we did some things well, and we still have a lot of work to do,” Vestavia Hills head coach Mandy Burgess said.
The Rebels were impressive in their opening match against Briarwood, winning 25-17, 25-13. Hannah Vines had 3 aces and Jenna Hogan contributed 3 kills. Mary Quinn Carter also registered 7 of her 11 total digs against the Lions.
If there were any qualms on the night, it was in the Rebels’ second match, against Homewood. Vestavia took the first set handily, 25-12, but let the Lady Patriots claw their way back in the second set.
“Sense of urgency, having a lead, we didn’t maintain and keep that lead,” Burgess said.
The Rebels won the set, 25-20, to sweep all four sets they played during the evening. Emma Grace Harris had 5 digs against the Lady Patriots.
Final point
Briarwood defeated Homewood, 16-25, 26-24, 15-8, in the opening match of the evening.
Avery Kampwerth was strong, racking up 13 kills overall. Caroline Dutton finished the night with 9 kills, while Vines had 7. Hogan finished with 2 solo blocks.
The Rebels have started off the season well, coming off the Juanita Boddie Tournament in Hoover last weekend.
“We’ve had a good, positive start,” Burgess said. “It’s been helpful to see where we are. We have some tweaking to do and some fine-tuning to see where our capabilities are.”
Vestavia Hills heads to Guntersville for another tri-match with Guntersville and Addison on Thursday.
