The Vestavia Hills Rebels swept Hoover in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs this past weekend.
The Rebels, ranked No. 1 in the final regular season poll, topped the Bucs 4-3 and 5-3 to move on to the round of 8. They will travel to Thompson, the third-ranked team in the state, for a Friday, May 1, doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. A third game, if necessary in the best-of-three series, would be Saturday.
The winner of the Vestavia-Thompson series advances to the state semifinals. Thompson beat Mountain Brook in three games.
Since the new Class 7A only has 32 teams, 16 teams made the playoffs, shortening the playoffs to four rounds. All other classes have 32 teams in the playoffs and go five rounds.
