Vestavia Hills residents have been sharply divided over whether the high school should keep its Rebel mascot. After the Board of Education meeting Wednesday, July 15, the Board voted to keep the VHHS Rebel name, but stated they will enter into an aggressive process with a professional firm to rebrand the mascot.
Before the Board's decision was announced, community members voted their opinions on what the school system should do. The majority of people who took the survey voted to keep both the Rebel name and mascot. Out of 1,220 respondents, 883 (72 percent) chose this option.
Only 184 people (15 percent) agreed with the Board of Education, voting to keep the Rebel name but choose a new mascot. The remaining 169 respondents (14 percent) voted for a new name and mascot.
Of those who took the survey, 588 (48 percent) said they were VHHS alumni and 133 (11 percent) said they were current students. There were 466 (38 percent) respondents who were Vestavia residents but not alumni, and 87 (7 percent) who did not live in Vestavia Hills.
