The 2018-19 Vestavia Hills City Schools teachers of the year are recognized at the Nov. 26 board of education meeting.
At a Nov. 26 meeting, the Vestavia Hills Board of Education approved a change order allowing Vestavia Hills City Schools to pay $713,480 to replace the entire roof at the Berry campus, which will become the new home of Pizitz Middle School in 2019.
The school will use a previously-approved allowance of at least $50,000 to pay for part of the project. When the original contract was approved, Assistant Superintendent Patrick Martin said school leaders knew part of the roof may need to be addressed, but contractors realized the entire roof needed replacing to ensure it does not leak. The project should not impact the schedule of the work being done at the Berry campus, a contractor said at the meeting.
The board also approved a $1,728 credit to the new kitchen and cafeteria project at Vestavia Hills Elementary West, bringing the total cost of the project down from about $5,592,000 to $5,590,000.
Several new courses for Vestavia Hills High School for the 2019-20 school year were also approved. The courses offer specialized teaching in nursing, architecture and sports and entertainment marketing.
The board approved personnel items as submitted by Superintendent Todd Freeman, and approved the following consent items:
- VHHS Wrestling Tournament in Gulf Shores from Feb. 1-2, 2019.
- VHHS Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys’ Soccer Community Service camp in Winnataska from Jan. 18-20, 2019.
- Pizitz Middle School art students: Youth Educational Series Programs on art, architecture, photography and animation in Orlando from April 24-28, 2019.
- Pizitz softball team tournament in Fort Payne from March 1-2, 2019.
