Moffat Tartan
An example of a traditional Scottish Moffat tartan fabric. Southminister Presbyterian Church in Vestavia Hills will honor Scottish culture on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, with a traditional "kirkin," or blessing, of tartan fabrics and other special items.
Southminster Presbyterian Church in Vestavia Hills will host the traditional “Kirkin of the Tartans” during a day of fun, family-friendly activities on Sunday, Oct. 28, according to a church announcement.
This is the first year that Southminster has hosted this unique event.
The “Kirkin of the Tartans” is a 250-year-old Scottish custom in which a minister offers blessings of tartan fabrics, as well as pictures, keepsakes and other unique items, for people of Scottish heritage.
The blessing will follow the worship service, which begins at 10:30 a.m.
Food trucks will be available for lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m.
In a special version of the Highland Games, to be held from noon to about 1:30 p.m., traditional events like the caber toss, stone put and hammer throw will be replaced by family-friendly games.
The games will take place on the newly dedicated Tillman Field, which celebrates the memory of long-time church member Tommy Tillman and the gift his wife, Ann, has made for field improvements.
Southminster Presbyterian is located at 1124 Montgomery Highway.
