A beloved former Pizitz Middle School teacher is turning 90 years old this month, and her family is hoping to surprise her with well-wishes from her former students.
Jean Massey taught seventh grade social studies from 1967 to 1988 alongside Emily Hicks, whose classroom was right next door.
Massey's son Clay describes her work as innovative, and says that his mother and Hicks pioneered the "Social Study Basic Skills" curriculum that was later adopted by the school board.
He said his mother and her fellow teachers worked tirelessly in their time at the middle school to provide fun and engaging lessons for their students.
Jean Massey and Emily Hicks still live in the area, and Massey will turn 90 on Oct. 20.
Her son said the family is hoping to gather up memories and well-wishes from her former students to surprise her on the big day.
