The Steamers 04s made history by becoming the first Alabama team in 21 years to win aregional soccer championship.
The Vestavia Hills Soccer Club had a successful Southern Regionals, with two of the five teams advancing out of group play and one team making history.
The Vestavia Steamers 04 boys became the second boys team in the history of Alabama soccer, and the first in 21 years, to win a regional soccer championship. They beat OK Energy from Oklahoma, 2-1, in the championship match at the Region III Youth Soccer Nationals Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The only other Alabama team to win regionals was also from Vestavia. Coach Shane Amsler's Steamers won at under-18, also in Greensboro, back in 1997.
Players on the team included Seth Acton, Joseph Armstrong, Joshua Bramblett, Parker Briggs, Todd Brownbridge, Nathaniel Carpenter, Carlos Del Toro-Urueta, Alan Guerra-Melendez, Olurotimi Kukoyi, Isaac Obermiller, Gabriel Russo, Alexis Sarabia-Trujillo, Nathanael Starzi, Nathan Tozzi and Kosi Udeh.
The Steamers 04s have been coached for the past four years by Carlo Schiavoni and were coached by Rocky Harmon and Jarred Brookings at the event. Goalkeeper Sims Tosh was awarded the Golden Glove award and defender Alan Melendez was awarded the Golden Boot.
Other assistants included AJ Roble and Brad Louis, along with trainer Kenny Davis and chief scout and director of soccer Luke Whittle.
