Slide the City
Slide the City features a three-lane, 1,000-foot water slide.
Slide the City is throwing a party in Vestavia Hills this Saturday. And the main event? Shooting 1,000 feet downhill on a multi-lane waterslide.
Slide the City is coming to Birmingham as a part of their 100-city tour across the United States and Canada. The family-friendly event kicks off with a block party at 9 a.m., featuring music, refreshments and a giant waterslide. The party will continue until mid-evening.
The slide will start at the top of Lime Rock Road, near Vestavia Hills High School, and unfurls all the way down the steep hill to Morgan Drive.
“[Sliders] will consider this the most fun event they’ve ever been to and the best money they’ve spent all year,” said Spencer Hunn, co-founder of Slide the City. “And it’s true ... it’s going to be a blast.”
The concept of Slide the City originated with other popular events, such as mud runs. While working for an event planning company, one of Hunn’s college friends came up with the idea for a similar event.
“We wanted to turn it into something that wasn’t as physically taxing, but a lot of fun,” Hunn said.
The company has been touring for a year and half. This Saturday will be their first event in Birmingham.
“The community’s really excited. They’re really welcoming us,” Hunn said.
Attendees can park at the high school. City manager Jeff Downes said that the city would work with the school to make sure parking did not interfere with a repaving project.
Downes said that part of Lime Rock Road will be blocked off for the day, but drivers can use residential roads to navigate around the party.
Tickets are available for purchase up to the day of the event, but the earlier people register, the lower the price. Tickets include an entry band, drawstring bag and mouthguard. Riders are required to use an inner tube to go down the slide, and they can either bring their own or buy one at the event. All sliders must be at least 5 years old and 46 inches tall.
