Construction continues on the new city hall, one of many projects underway along U.S. 31.
As Vestavia drivers head north on U.S. 31, construction emerges on both sides. First on the left, workers assemble America’s First Federal Credit Union. Just beyond, the construction of the new city hall continues and across the roadway, the first structural traces of Sprouts Farmers Market emerge.
“It’s exciting for people to get to see the action of the construction. It shows a sign of economic development,” City Manager Jeff Downes said.
Though these developments usually result in community benefit in the long run, construction and improvements can cause temporary disturbances. Earlier this summer, renewal of sections of U.S. 31 roadway caused traffic jams.
“The inductive loops that detect vehicle movement were being removed and replaced by new ones,” Downes said. “Laying down asphalt and pavement milling were also taking place. There is always a call for patience when new improvements are happening.”
With heavy traffic, Downes said, eventually all roads will be worn down and will have to be renewed.
“I didn’t have any complaints regarding the repaving of the roads,” resident Kelley Evers said. “I know that that is something that has to be done sooner or later.”
Sprouts and the new City Hall are two of the most talked about construction sites. The building permit for Sprouts was issued around June 17, following four to five months of site work during the initial start.
“The construction was delayed because a countless number of rocks were on the site. It took time to level the land, but now the construction is at full speed,” Downes said.
Restaurants such as Chipotle will open next to the grocery store and more are being sought. Sprouts will open for the public in April 2016.
“I was a little disappointed that Pizza Hut and Ruby Tuesday closed down, but I think that a new grocery store like Sprouts will greater benefit the community,” resident Bruce Berthon said.
Across the street, the new city hall is well underway. It is set to have its grand opening on Oct. 13.
“It will serve more than just an office building. We want people to know that if they have a new concept, bring it to Vestavia Hills and share your idea,” Downes said.
Around the city hall complex, a large lawn will also be constructed for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
“Vestavia doesn’t have a lot of parks that are not used for recreational purposes,” Downes said. “That’s why this new lawn is being created.”
In the near future, the old city hall will be demolished and a Chick-fil-A is planned to open in its location on Jan. 16, 2016. In addition, continued tenant renovations will occur in the City Center and further improvements of the facilities in Wald Park will also be added to the agenda.
