Vestavia Hills Board of Education member Shera Grant has resigned her position on the board, City Council member John Henley announced Monday.
Grant, who was the most recent appointment to the board, delivered her letter of resignation to Superintendent Sheila Phillips, effective Thursday, Jan. 28.
"We congratulate Judge Grant for her appointment to the Jefferson County District Court and appreciate her service over the past year on the Vestavia Hills Board of Education," communications specialist Whit McGhee said on behalf of the school system.
"Judge Grant has been a tremendous asset in her role of service for Vestavia Hills City Schools. She is an exemplary member of this community, and we are grateful for her contribution to our students and our system of learning."
Henley said Grant was appointed by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley to fill the unexpired term of the Jefferson County Civil Court seat of Judge Jack Lowther, who retired in November.
Now, the council will seek an individual to fill Grant’s unexpired term on the board, which will run through June of 2020.
The city will begin taking applications at noon Tuesday, and applications are available online at vhal.org or at the City Clerk’s office. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, the beginning of the next Council meeting.
Henley said interviews will then be conducted on either Feb. 10 or Feb. 17, depending on scheduling.
A vote on the new board member will take place at the Feb. 22 City Council meeting, and the individual selected will take the seat immediately, attending their first board of education meeting on Feb. 24.
“The board of education will not be without a member for any board meetings,” Henley said.
Henley said questions can be directed to either the City Clerk’s office, or to him directly. The office of the City Clerk can be reached at 978-0131.
