Mayor Butch Zaragoza recognized the retirement of Lawrence Russell at the Council meeting.
The Vestavia Hills City Council voted to award the bid for the second phase of the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex to The Pennington Group, Inc. Monday at its regular meeting.
Phase II, which includes the addition of walking trails and other park amenities, was originally bid in March and awarded to CB&A. However, that bid was predicated on an in-kind donation of on-site work which fell through, and CB&A’s contractor’s license was industrial rather than municipal, and the bid fell through.
The project was re-bid at the end of May, and Monday the council accepted a bid from Pennington Group with a base of $844,000 with total alternate possibilities of around $1.5 million. Like the previous agreement, the city would pay $599,000 of the total cost, with the Parks and Recreation Foundation funding the remainder.
The Pennington Group has an office on Oxmoor Road, and the city has been working with Stewart Robinson.
The Council also voted to approve new flooring in the Community Room of the Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest. The current floor, made up of khaki-colored carpet squares, has become stained, and the Library Board recommended replacing the squares with vinyl planks.
Other Council Business:
- Two alcohol licenses were approved, one for the Encore store on Acton Road and one for Diplomat Deli off of Highway 31. The Diplomat Deli will no longer have a liquor store as part of its business, as its new owners have opted to focus on the food and drink served at the location.
- The Council voted to enter a remediation agreement with Deborah Reinhardt for her property at 1756 Indian Creek Drive. Reinhardt agreed to work to make the house presentable and structurally sound, while removing its contents in a timely manner. She also agreed to vacate the property by July 18, and list the property with a licensed real estate agent.
- The Council approved an ordinance accepting a refinancing agreement on its 2009 debt.
- Mayor Butch Zaragoza and the other Council members recognized the retirement of public works employee Lawrence Russell, and thanked him for his many years of service.
