The second annual Chalk the Hills event was rescheduled for Aug. 8 at Andy’s Garden Center in Rocky Ridge.
“Our goal with Chalk the Hills is simple: to create an event that brings people together through creativity,” said Andy Burns, owner of Andy’s Garden Center. “We hope families leave with wonderful memories, a few chalk-covered hands, and a desire to come back year after year.”
The concept involves having the outdoor space at Andy’s Garden Center transformed into a blank canvas for artists of all ages to create colorful sidewalk chalk masterpieces.
This year’s theme is “Where Imagination Comes to Life,” encouraging participants to let their creativity run wild.
While it is an art contest, the event is designed for families to come and relax, create memories and enjoy the garden center during a summer evening.
There will also be live music, Sunshine Creamery ice cream, The Ridge Eat and Drink, Our Deep Earth Gem Mine and fire pits with s’mores.
There are three competition categories including ages 12 and under, ages 13 to 18, and ages 19 and older.
“Whether someone is an experienced artist or simply enjoys drawing with their children, we encourage them to participate,” Burns said. “Many families work together on a design, while others simply come to watch the artwork come to life throughout the evening.”
Burns said during the event’s first year, there was a large variety of artwork.
“Last year, we saw colorful animals, landscapes, inspirational scenes, whimsical fantasy creations, favorite characters, and imaginative original designs,” Burns said. “Every section of sidewalk became its own unique work of art, making the entire garden center feel like an outdoor gallery.”
The event is located at 3351 Morgan Drive in Vestavia.
