On May 5 around 1:44 p.m., a Vestavia Hills police officer attempted to pull over a 1988 Buick Regal on Columbiana Road. As the officer radioed in the tag number, the vehicle reportedly sped away and dispatch notified the officer that the car had been stolen out of Birmingham, according to police.
The officer reportedly pursued the Buick in a chase that went through Vestavia Hills and into Homewood, where Homewood police officers joined the pursuit. It continued onto the Red Mountain Expressway in Birmingham, onto Interstate 59/20 West and into Ensley, where the pursuit ended in a car crash. The suspect vehicle collided with another car at the intersection of 20th Street and Ave I.
No one was seriously hurt in the crash, but the driver of the second vehicle was taken to a local hospital, according to police.
The five occupants in the Buick reportedly got out of the car and ran from officers, and three were captured with the assistance of Homewood officers, Jefferson County Deputies and a K-9.
One Vestavia Hills police vehicle was reportedly damaged in the pursuit after the suspects hit the vehicle on Interstate 59/20.
