We all know the excitement and jitters kids feel when heading back to school, but let's take a moment to acknowledge the parents and caregivers, too. The transition can be just as stressful for them.
To make the transition smoother for both you and your family, here are some tips provided by COMPACT, a program that connects Shelby County families with the resources they need to help teens adopt happy, healthy, substance-free lifestyles.
Shared Calendars: Whether it's a big, colorful wall calendar or a shared digital one, logging sports, school events and work commitments keeps everyone on the same page. Taking a few minutes on Sunday nights to review the week ahead makes a huge difference.
Easy Meal Prep: Cooking a big batch of protein over the weekend makes busy weeknights much easier. Reheating the protein and making a quick side helps you get dinner ready quickly.
Managing Laundry: To avoid late-night or early morning panic over a missing uniform or shirt for picture day, try running a small load each morning and throwing it in the dryer once you get home. It's also a wonderful opportunity to teach kids in middle-school and younger how to do their own wash.
Time for You: Caregivers offer so much of themselves to everyone else. Don't forget your own mental health during this transition. Kids and adults need a brain break, a few moments to catch their breath and focus on something that brings them joy. Squeeze in a short walk at work or while waiting at your kid's activities. Or after the kids go to bed, work on a hobby you enjoy.
Intentional Family Time: With busy schedules, connection can get lost in the shuffle. Aim for doing something together that's not centered on school activities, a time when you all can participate. Maybe it's a walk or bike ride after dinner or a family game night. The point is to connect and enjoy some laughter and smiles. Most importantly, intentionally building connection builds memories that last a lifetime.
COMPACT is managed by the Shelby County District Attorney, the Shelby County Manager and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
