Dr. Holly Gunn, a board-certified dermatologist, opened her practice in Crestline Village in August. She lives in Mountain Brook with her husband Stephen and their four daughters.
Q: When did you realize you wanted to be a doctor?
A: From the age of 5 in Mobile, I told my parents I wanted to help people. When one of my playmates was hurt, I would be the one to clean the injury, grab the ice and bandages, hug them when they needed it.
Q: What’s your vision for your practice?
A: The doctors I looked up to as a child were in mom-and-pop offices helping people feel better. This is living out my dream.
Q: What is your expertise?
A: I’m very skilled in medical, pediatric and surgical dermatology and have a special interest in cosmetic dermatology. I’m adept at treating most skin ailments including acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, signs of aging and more.
Q: What problems can you solve for patients?
A: I do everything that makes the skin feel and look better and actually become healthier. I also help patients who have disfiguring scars due to acne, skin-cancer removal or other genetic conditions.
Q: What’s your benchmark for success?
A: I've had so many patients improve their lives by becoming more confident after cosmetic treatments or getting their skin condition under control. Some of these patients are given the confidence to change careers or get a job they really want. I want to be a helper that improves my patients lives.
Q: Is there anything else you tell patients?
A: I’m passionate about skin cancer prevention and warn people about sun-tanning beds. In graduate school, I wrote a book to help parents help their children protect themselves from the sun. I love treating and educating kids. We treat all generations of the family from babies to grandparents.
Q: What’s your educational background?
A: I earned a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Maryland in 2003 and completed medical school at the University of South Alabama in 2007. I then completed an internal medicine internship, research fellowship and dermatology residency at Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center. I earned a master’s degree in public health sciences at Penn State.
Q: What’s your professional background?
A: I’ve been practicing dermatology for 12 years and was medical director for a dermatology department for a large hospital system in Cincinnati prior to becoming an assistant professor of dermatology at UAB and medical director of the UAB Dermatology Cosmetic and Laser Clinic. I’ve also worked in private practice before starting Gunn Dermatology.
Q: What sort of atmosphere does your practice have?
A: I want Gunn Dermatology to be part of Mountain Brook and have a warm, friendly feeling. We follow extensive COVID-19 safety protocols, with information on our website. I want this to be a pleasant, safe place for our staff and patients.
Q: Are you happy with your location?
A: Crestline Village is a great place to be. You get this small, hometown feeling even though you’re close to the big city. And I love Mountain Brook’s ambiance. Now I can serve the community I love.
