The Vestavia Rebels (2-0, 1-0 Class 7A, Region 3) entertain region foe Hewitt-Trussville on Friday.

The Rebels can match last season’s win total by knocking off the Huskies.

Last Friday, the Rebels ripped Oak Mountain 35-26 in a game not as close as that score would indicate. Vestavia Hills overpowered last year’s Class 7A, Region 3 runner-up with a punishing running game and the physical play of their offensive and defensive lines.

The Rebels built leads of 14-0, 28-13 and 35-13 before the Eagles added a couple of late scores.

Walker Minor rushed for more than 100 yards for the second straight week and scored three touchdowns for the second straight week. Against the Eagles, the Rebels senior tailback racked up 119 yards and two rushing scores to go with 67 yards receiving and another touchdown. Toliver Chatwood added 58 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Defensively, Reid Adams forced a fumble that Nate Lewis recovered to stop an Oak Mountain threat inside the Rebels 5 early in the second half.

Hewitt-Trussville is 2-1 and 1-0 in region play. After a loss at Montgomery Bell, Tenn., the Huskies bounced back by beating 6A Gardendale and whipping region foe Tuscaloosa County 38-14.

In last week’s game, Ole Miss commitment Jarrion Street rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Zac Thomas picked up 114 yards and a TD.

Vestavia won 14-3 at Trussville last season, the 310th win in coach Buddy Anderson’s career, setting the state record for career wins. The Rebels are 12-0 all-time against Hewitt-Trussville.

Kickoff at Thompson Reynolds Stadium/Buddy Anderson Field is 7 p.m.
