The Reset: Basketball teams play in Thanksgiving tournaments

BASKETBALL

The Vestavia Hills basketball teams played in Thanksgiving week tournaments last week.

The girls team finished up at Mountain Brook in the Spartan Turkey Jam after opening the tournament with a 60-31 win over Clay-Chalkville on Saturday, Nov. 17. Last Monday, the Lady Rebels fell in a heartbreaker to Central-Tuscaloosa, 45-44. Emma Smith scored 13 points to lead the team, with Josie Edwards adding 12. On Tuesday, Vestavia Hills fell to Shades Valley 50-44 and now has a 4-2 record on the season. Edwards scored 10 points in the loss.

The boys team finished as runner-up, as they hosted the 40th annual Sneaky Pete’s Rebel Classic. The Rebels opened the tournament last Monday with a 61-25 win over Clay-Chalkville. Luke Couch scored 14 points and Davis Holbert added 12. In the semifinals on Tuesday, Vestavia Hills posted a 66-47 victory over Baker, behind 22 points and five rebounds from Couch. Paul Michael Hargrove had a solid performance as well, with 18 points and eight boards. Jackson Smith added 11 points.

The Rebels fell to Lee-Montgomery 52-36 on Wednesday in the final to conclude the tournament. Couch had 12 points to lead the way.

This week, Vestavia Hills hosts Pleasant Grove on Thursday and Homewood on Friday.
