The Reset: Basketball, bowling off to strong starts

BASKETBALL

The Vestavia Hills basketball teams began their week on Tuesday evening by hosting Hueytown. The Lady Rebels dominated and cruised to a 70-17 win over the Golden Gophers. Five players scored in double figures, as a balanced attack saw Ally Smith, Emma Smith, Grace Uldrich and Anna Wood all score 11 points. Josie Edwards scored 10.

The boys team fell to Hueytown, 66-57, despite Paul Michael Hargrove’s impressive stat line of 30 points and nine rebounds. Luke Couch scored 17 points and grabbed nine boards as well.

The Rebels swept Helena on Thursday, as the girls picked up a 37-12 win. Emma Smith led the way with nine points and Edwards added eight. The boys won, 52-39, behind 22 points from Couch. Hargrove added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Rebels began play in the Spartan Turkey Jam at Mountain Brook on Saturday. They picked up a 60-31 win and improved to 4-0 on the season. Wood went off for 23 points, with Arden Plugge adding 10. Aukeivah Tellis led the Lady Cougars with nine points. Vestavia plays Central-Tuscaloosa at 3 p.m. on Monday in the semifinals and will conclude tournament play on Tuesday.

The boys team hosts the annual Sneaky Pete’s Rebel Classic Monday through Wednesday. The Rebels begin play on Monday at 7:30 p.m. against Clay-Chalkville.


BOWLING

The Vestavia Hills bowling teams are off to strong starts on their seasons and put together a few wins last week.

On Tuesday, the Rebels swept Oak Grove, with the boys winning 1,525-1,025 and the girls winning 1,014-874. Beau Reed led the boys with a 215, while Suha Mohiuddin bowled a 166 to lead the girls.

Both teams defeated Ramsay on Wednesday, as the boys won 1,415-1,063 and the girls won 996-668. Reed and Boris Lu each scored a 209 to lead the boys team and Mohiuddin led the girls with a 144.

The Rebels teams improved to 5-0 in area play on Thursday, with a sweep over Homewood and Parker. Jacob Pilleteri led the boys team with a 225 and Benley Brunson had a 142 for the girls.
