The Reset: Strand wins, basketball season begins

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Vestavia Hills cross-country teams completed their seasons at the Class 7A state meet on Saturday in Moulton. The boys put together a great showing, placing second with 88 points, behind Huntsville (52 points). The girls team placed 10th.

Ethan Strand was the individual winner in the boys race, crossing the line in 15:24.29. Bryce Hutchinson followed with a seventh-place finish in 15:54.84. John Ingram (15th, 16:15.62) and Andrew Precise (27th, 16:27.41) were also in the top 30, followed by Ryan McConnell (46th, 16:54.79), Grant Kaiser (55th, 17:05.01), Jackson Campbell (62nd, 17:15.81), Benjamin Knighten (67th, 17:18.69), William Morris (71st, 17:21.1) and Alex Baker (82nd, 17:29.01).

The girls team was led by Crawford West, who placed 30th with a time of 19:55.68. Katy Lambert finished 38th, crossing the line in 20:14.69. Other runners for the girls were Christina Sorochinsky (58th, 20:48.96), Natalie Law (75th, 21:16.74), Sarah Comer (80th, 21:24.73), Margaret Patton (82nd, 21:26.07), MaryGriffith Lytle (89th, 21:41.74), Mary Claire Boughner (106th, 22:17.58), Eden Roberson (117th, 22:37.56) and Sophia Velezis (133rd, 22:57.4).


BASKETBALL

The Vestavia Hills basketball teams began their seasons last Thursday at Chelsea. The Lady Rebels posted a 61-39 win, with Anna Wood’s 19 points leading the way. Vestavia Hills won the turnover battle and head coach Laura Casey gave credit to Alison Stubbs for guarding Chelsea’s top player. Emma Smith tallied 11 points and Ally Smith scored nine.

The boys also won, notching a 56-25 victory. Luke Couch posted 17 points, as he drained five 3-pointers in the game. Both teams head to Hueytown on Tuesday and Helena on Thursday, and the girls begin play in Mountain Brook’s Spartan Turkey Jam on Saturday.
