The Reset: Fall sports begin

Over the course of the year, Vestavia Voice will keep you up to date on the various Vestavia Hills High School athletic teams.


FOOTBALL

The Vestavia Hills football team opened its season with its annual jamboree game against Briarwood on Aug. 24. The Rebels followed up that tune-up with a season-opening win over rival Homewood on Friday night.

This week, the Rebels open up Class 7A, Region 3 play at Spain Park on Friday.


VOLLEYBALL

Vestavia Hills opened up its volleyball season on Thursday, Aug. 23, at Hoover. The match was tight, but the Rebels fell in four sets (26-28, 27-25, 18-25, 25-27). They rebounded to pick up their first win last week, sweeping Homewood on Tuesday, Aug. 28 (25-14, 25-16, 25-11).

On Thursday, the Rebels picked up a pair of wins in a tri-match against Pelham and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. Vestavia Hills swept Hillcrest (25-12, 27-25) and defeated defending Class 6A champion Pelham in three sets (25-19, 17-25, 15-13).

Over the weekend the Rebels played in the Juanita Boddie Tournament, hosted by Hoover at the Finley Center. Vestavia Hills won all three of its pool play matches, beating Blessed Trinity (25-18, 26-24), Brentwood Academy (25-13, 25-15) and Parker (25-16, 25-13). The Rebels were put out in the first round of Gold bracket play, as they fell to Columbus (22-25, 24-26).

This week, Vestavia Hills travels to Mountain Brook on Thursday to begin area play.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Vestavia Hills began its cross-country season on Thursday at the Warrior 2 Mile Challenge in Alabaster. The Rebels boys and girls teams each finished fourth in team scoring. Sarah Beth Stair led the girls with a time of 15:26.66 (33rd), followed closely by Mallory Barry (15:29.51), Mary Claire Boughner (15:33.53) and Anna Kate Boles (15:33.61). Sophia Velezis, Elizabeth Hargrove, Clarissa Meadows, Allison Strong, Anna Blye Clark and Caroline Magee also ran.

Grant Kaiser paced the boys with an 18th place finish (11:51.07). Sam Culbertson and Ryan McConnell each posted top-25 finishes as well.

This week, the Rebels will compete in the Chickasaw Trails Invitational.
