The Reset: Rebels tennis honors seniors

BASEBALL

The Vestavia Hills baseball team grabbed a critical 6-2 area win over Tuscaloosa County on Tuesday. Andrew Knight was the offensive star for the Rebels, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Colton Lewis was stellar in six innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out 10 batters.

The Rebels completed the Class 7A, Area 5 sweep of Tuscaloosa County with two more wins on Thursday. In the first game, Vestavia Hills cruised to a 6-0 victory as Garrison Cherry surrendered just four hits and struck out five in a complete game effort. Sean Smyth racked up three hits and scored twice, and Lewis, Knight and Luke Whitaker all registered two hits. Chris Dugas, Knight and Whitaker each drove in runs in Vestavia’s 5-2 win in the nightcap.

SOFTBALL

The Vestavia Hills softball team, not at full strength due to several players suffering from the flu, dropped a Class 7A, Area 5 contest to Thompson, 17-0, on Tuesday.

The Rebels rebounded on Wednesday to topple Sumiton Christian, 12-8. Mary Claire Wilson drove in two runs and scored three times in the game, while Arden Plugge knocked in a pair as well. Mary Sanders James and Merritt Cahoon had two hits apiece at the top of the order.

SOCCER

The Vestavia Hills girls soccer team cruised to a 6-1 win over Gadsden City on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, the boys team held off Cullman, 1-0. The girls tied Mill Creek (Georgia), 1-1, on Saturday.

On Thursday, the boys team knocked off area foe Hoover, 3-0.

TENNIS

The Vestavia Hills boys tennis team pulled off a tight 5-4 win over Mountain Brook on Wednesday. Alex Lloyd, Clay Castleberry and Robert Hill won singles matches. The doubles pairs of Lloyd and Castleberry, and Sam Smith and Jack Kimbrough each picked up victories as well.

The boys swept Thompson, 9-0, on Thursday to improve to 12-1 on the season, as the Rebels celebrated seniors Hill, Jimmy Creamer, Lloyd and Castleberry.
