The Reset: Big week for Rebels spring sports

SOFTBALL

The Vestavia Hills High School softball team lost a wild 22-14 decision to Hewitt-Trussville on Monday night. The Rebels took a 12-9 lead after four innings but the Huskies dominated the final few innings. In the game, Gwynnie Hornibrook drove in four runs, while Mary Claire Wilson and Hannah Grace Roden each had three RBIs.

The Rebels dropped an area contest to Thompson, 18-5, on Thursday. Wilson and Hornibrook each drove in two runs.

Over the weekend, Vestavia Hills competed in Wetumpka’s tournament. The Rebels picked up a pair of wins on Friday, beginning with a 4-3 win over Thomasville. Emma Shofner’s RBI triple in the third inning proved the difference in the victory. The Rebels notched just one hit in the second game, but it was enough to earn a 5-3 win over Auburn.

Vestavia fell to Enterprise, 3-0, on Saturday, to end its run in the tournament.

SOCCER

The Vestavia Hills girls soccer team began area play with a 3-1 win over Thompson on Tuesday. On Thursday, the boys team defeated Thompson, 1-0.

On Friday, the girls team picked up another area win with a 4-1 win over Hoover. The Rebels boys team fell to Hoover, 2-1, on Saturday. The Rebels jumped to the lead with the first goal, but couldn’t hold on.

BASEBALL

The Vestavia Hills baseball team rallied to secure an 11-9 win over Spain Park on Tuesday. The Rebels scored five runs in the seventh and went ahead on Luke Whitaker’s two-run single. Whitaker also homered in the contest. William Schaffeld, Colton Lewis and Chris Dugas each picked up two hits.

The Rebels were swept in a doubleheader on Thursday, losing 5-4 and 10-2 to Northridge. In the first game, Luke Whitaker went 4-for-4 with two home runs. Grant Cacace, Lewis and Sean Smyth each doubled in the contest. In the second game, Northridge scored five runs in the first and cruised from there. Britton Rembert picked up a pair of hits.

TENNIS

Last week, the Vestavia Hills girls tennis team knocked off Spain Park, 7-2, and placed second in the Marcia Weinacker Tournament at Birmingham-Southern on Saturday.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Vestavia Hills outdoor track and field teams hosted the King of the Mountain event on Saturday. The girls 4x800-meter relay team finished second with a time of 10:44.28. Katherine Ratliff placed third in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet. Ratliff brought home top honors in the javelin competition (116-2). James Sweeney placed third in the 800, finishing with a time of 2:00.87. He then won the 1600 in 4:25.45. The boys 4x800 relay team finished third with a time of 8:39.66. In the field, Jake Haston was second in the pole vault after clearing 13 feet. Colin Scollard posted a 167-foot throw to finish second in the javelin competition.
