The Reset: Spring sports in full swing

BASEBALL

The Vestavia Hills High School baseball team won in walk-off fashion on Tuesday night, beating Homewood 5-4. Jack Mason was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the winning run. Mason drove in two runs in the contest. Eric Schroeder pitched four innings for the Rebels, surrendering just four hits and an unearned run.

The Rebels picked up a split in Saturday’s action. They fell to Calera, 5-4, in eight innings in the first game of the day, despite three RBIs from Mason Maners. Garrison Cherry shut down Pelham in the second game, as the Rebels won 3-0. Cherry allowed just four hits and one walk to go along with 11 strikeouts in a dominant performance.

SOFTBALL

The Vestavia Hills softball team fell to reigning Class 5A champion Springville, 5-4, on Tuesday. The Rebels jumped out to a 4-0 lead but were unable to hang on. Mary Claire Wilson led the team offensively with a 2-for-4 outing with three RBIs. Hannah Grace Roden had a pair of hits as well.

The Rebels competed in Spain Park’s Jag Classic over the weekend and won both of their pool games on Friday. In a 10-3 win over Brookwood, Merritt Cahoon homered and drove in three runs. Nikki Hammond got the win in the circle. Freshman Gwynnie Hornibrook had the RBI hit in the international tiebreaker to give the Rebels the 4-3 win over Hale County. Roden pitched four innings for the win.

On Saturday, the Rebels beat Dothan before falling to Mortimer Jordan. In the 6-2 win over Dothan, Mary Sanders James had a double and a triple to drive in three runs. Cahoon had a pair of RBIs as well. The Rebels allowed two runs in the final inning in a 3-2 loss to Mortimer Jordan.

SOCCER

The Vestavia Hills boys soccer team knocked off Mountain Brook, 3-2, on Tuesday. On Friday, the girls team knocked off Spain Park, 3-0.

NOTABLE

Madeline Meredith, a freshman tennis player at Auburn University who hails from Vestavia Hills, was named SEC Freshman of the Week after a perfect showing at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery.
