HS sports recap: Rebels host Sneaky Pete's Rebel Classic

Here's a look back at the last week in Vestavia Hills High School sports.


BASKETBALL

The Vestavia Hills boys basketball team began hosting the Sneaky Pete’s Rebel Classic last Monday, with the Rebels starting things with a dominant 88-34 win over Orange Beach. Ben Evans led the way for the Rebels with 13 points, while Jordan Ross added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Win Miller scored 11 points and dropped 5 assists as well.

On Tuesday, Vestavia Hills’ boys beat Prattville 102-48 in the semifinals of the Sneaky Pete’s Rebel Classic. Jackson Weaver had a strong game, going for 16 points and 6 rebounds. Joshua Heald scored 15 points, Miller added 14, William Worrell scored 12, and Jordan Ross and Adam Barksdale each notched 11 points. Ross pulled down 7 rebounds as well.

The Lady Rebels traveled to Wallace State Community College and knocked off Mortimer Jordan 61-49. Anna Towry had a strong game with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Sarah Gordon also contributed in a big way, going for 16 points and 8 rebounds.

The Vestavia Hills girls impressed once again Wednesday, beating McEachern (Georgia) 54-27 in a game at Wallace State. Gordon and Towry led the charge once again, with Gordon going for 18 points and 8 rebounds, and Towry adding 16 points.

The Vestavia boys fell to Sparkman 64-60 in the final of the Sneaky Pete’s Rebel Classic. Sparkman’s Karmelo Montgomery was named the MVP of the tournament, and he posted 19 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks in the game. Trey Berger and Chase Bell each notched 11 points for the Sentors. For the Rebels, Miller had 26 points and 5 rebounds. Evans had 15 points and 4 rebounds, and Weaver finished the game with 9 points and 6 rebounds.


WRESTLING

The Vestavia Hills wrestling team competed in the Ricky Miller Memorial Duals at Tuscaloosa County last Tuesday. The Rebels won their pool and finished second in the gold bracket.

Vestavia Hills began the event with a 78-3 rout of Northridge. Robert Sasser (106 pounds), Charles Noto (113), Ezekiel Putman (120), Ben Wallace (126), Bennett Ashley (132), Hastings Roberts (138), Rooks Black (145), Harris Mitchell (160), Mark Rainey (170), Luke Dutton (182), Caleb Boylan (195), Austin Wilbanks (220) and Hunter Stough (285) all won their matches in that round.

The Rebels followed that up with a 72-12 victory over Hueytown. Tim Snow (120), Angel Garcia (126), Ashley, Roberts, Lincoln Goforth (145), Bradley Moncrief (152), Chase Belcher (160), Rainey, Dutton, Wilbanks, Stough, Jakorian Cargill (285), Sasser and Noto each picked up victories. 

Vestavia Hills then beat Tuscaloosa County 39-32. Noto, Putman, Wallace, Ashley, Walker Hogue (138), Owen Wilbanks (145), Dutton and Austin Wilbanks all won. The Rebels concluded the event with a narrow 39-36 loss to Oak Mountain.
