April full of school, fundraising events

With Spring Break behind them, students, faculty and staff at Vestavia Hills City Schools are looking forward to a month full of events.

April will hold everything from fundraisers, art shows and the high school’s spring play to the much-anticipated annual Relay For Life culminating event.

Relay for Life

After months of events, campaigns and preparation, Vestavia Hills High School students will paint the town purple on Saturday, April 14 as they try to surpass their own fundraising record at Relay for Life 2018.

The day will be the culminating event for students’ efforts to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and the pediatric oncology department at Children’s of Alabama.

Festivities will kick off at noon when the gates open to the public, followed shortly by the survivors’ lunch at 12:30 p.m.

At 1:30, students and participants will gather on the track for the opening ceremony and survivors’ lap.

Throughout the day student bands will be performing, and a kids’ activity area will be open from 2:30 to 4:30 for children ages 2-10.

At 8 p.m., there will be a luminaria ceremony to honor lives lost to cancer, and the day will end at 9:30 when the final fundraising total is announced.

Kym Pruitt, the sponsor for Youth Leadership Vestavia Hills, said students are hoping to raise $250,000 for the two selected cancer charities. In both 2016 and 2017, students were able to surpass that goal and were recognized by the American Cancer Society as the No. 1 student event nationwide.

Taste of the Heights

Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights will have another chance to show off its new gym this month as Taste of the Heights returns for its fourth year.

The event showcases artwork done throughout the school year by students grades K-5, and parents can purchase artwork as well.

During the event, guests will be able to sample dishes from local restaurants as they peruse the different art collections, and there will be live music and other activities. Taste of the Heights will be held April 17, 5-7 p.m.

Spring Musical

Vestavia Hills High School students will be performing a twist on everyone’s favorite fairy tales as the theater department brings to life Stephen Sondheim’s “Into The Woods.”

Theater teacher Jamie Stephenson said students have been rehearsing, building sets and getting costumes ready for the spring musical since January, and Gavin Dover has been working with students as the musical director.
