A staffing issue that caused some families at Vestavia Hills Elementary West to be put on a waitlist for the extended-day program has been resolved, Vestavia City School Communications Director Whit McGee said.

In the last week, there were a number of new signups for the program at West, McGee said, which caused an unexpected change in the state recommended student-to-teacher ratio. Because of that change, the school had to waitlist some families, causing some concern among parents.

On Thursday, the first day of school in Vestavia, the school worked through their staffing agency to address the issue, hiring new staff and as of Thursday afternoon, those who had been waitlisted were being enrolled, McGee said.

Because many of those already enrolled in the program were kindergarten students who didn’t start Thursday, there were no issues for the first day of school, McGee said.

It was unknown how many more staff members were hired to resolve the situation, McGee said.
