Vestavia Hills Elementary Liberty Park put a new twist on its annual Good Eats & Sweet Treats event.

The event was held on Feb. 4, and in addition to the usual open house, dinner and silent auction, students participated in a “bring-a-dish” fundraiser. Younger students participated in a treat walk, and older students participated in a Cake Wars-style competition. Prizes were awarded to the best Cake War team and for best desserts.

“I really loved seeing how exited the kids were to work together decorating their cakes, and to see how much their friends and classmates enjoyed cheering them on,” said event co-chair Rhonda Nabors. “It was a great night of family fun that combined old-school potluck sharing and a dose of fun competition.”

Teams of adults and kids also provided dessert bites, some of which were made with recipes from the cookbook created for the Good Eats & Sweet Treats event. This cookbook includes more than 400 recipes contributed by VHELP families, and it was sold during the event.

“For an event organizer, it was truly heart-warming to see both families who had been at the school for several years and new families cheer on their kids and really feel a sense of community as they perused the yummy dishes,” said PTO president Kathy Henderson.

The event was also chaired by VP of fundraising Meg Dedmon and Betsy Joyner.
