BOE appoints coaches, reviews superintendent evaluation
The Vestavia Hills board of education met Wednesday to address several items of business, make personnel decisions and to discuss the recent evaluation of Superintendent Sheila Phillips.
The board approved and announced Patrick Davis as the new VHHS basketball coach, and Tee Adams as the new wrestling coach.
Jennifer Bailey was also approved and announced as a curriculum and instruction specialist.
A portion of the regularly-scheduled April meeting was dedicated to reviewing the recent evaluation of Phillips, which was done using a program from the Alabama Association of School Boards.
The program evaluates individuals based on different categories, 10 of which were used in Phillips’ case. Board members ranked the superintendent on a scale of one to five, with five being the highest possible degree of excellence.
Overall, Susan Salter reported to the board that Phillips scored a 4.8 average score, an increase from her 4.6 score last year.
Other board business Included:
- The Board approved an approximately $48,000 contract with Johnny Hamilton Painting for painting projects at multiple schools.
- The Board approved an agreement contract between the school system and the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative, which would start over the summer.
- The contract for the former Berry Middle School was revised, accommodating the need to wait for court approval.
- The Board approved a textbook adoption list.
- Changes to the Pizitz Middle School band fees and an increase in the school’s Family and Consumer Sciences classroom fee from $25 to $35 were approved.
- Two principal employment contracts, for Kay Cooper and Meredith Hanson, were approved.
- Multiple job descriptions, including Director of Administrative Services, Director of Special Education Services and Coordinator of Technology, were revised and the salary schedule for the technology coordinator was approved.
- The Board approved the Vestavia Hills City Schools Virtual Education Option Policy, as required by the state.
- The Board also recognized the VHHS debate team and Continental Math League, and additionally saluted the entire VHHS student body for their reaction and composure during the March 9 electric shock accident.
