Vestavia Hills High School students and supporters painted the town purple Saturday to raise funds for cancer research.

The 2016 Purple People Color Run saw more than 600 participants in its 5K race and one-mile fun run, and raised over $17,000 in funds.

The race is part of the school's spring fundraising efforts for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, with a goal of raising over $250,000 in total.

Andrew Precise was the first place finisher in the 5K, with Will Meadows finishing second and Charlie Hamilton coming in third. Katie Lambert took first place in the fun run.

The final Relay for Life event at Vestavia Hills High School will take place on Saturday, April 16.
