It’s that time of year again, when holiday cheer fills the radio stations and TV channels. The Birmingham Boys Choir is hoping to bring some to guests at its 41st annual Christmas Concert this year, too.

Music Director Ken Berg said that through the years, the size of the audience and membership has “increased dramatically … and it’s easy to see (and hear) why.”

The audience has grown such that the concert has found a new home this year in Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Vestavia Hills. While Berg said Canterbury United Methodist Church served as a great venue in past years, the concert had simply outgrown its space.

But even in the new location, guests can expect the classic Christmas carols the BBC concert is known for.

“This is a Christmas concert, completely Christmas focused; not a ‘holiday’ concert or a ‘winter’ concert,” he said. Carols from British, Welsh and Spanish cultures will also be included. Berg said the Senior Choristers will perform the “Ceremony of Carols” by Benjamin Britten, and “our Junior Choristers (third- through fifth-graders) are so strong this year, they stand a good chance of stealing the show … again.”

In keeping with the tradition, the annual Christmas Concert will remain free to all guests. No ticket or RSVP is necessary for the show, set for 7 p.m. Dec. 20, although Berg suggested audience members arrive early to ensure they get their desired seats. Typically, more than 2,000 people fill the seats, he said.
