Vestavia Hills High School science teacher Marla Hines was recently chosen by the White House as a 2015 recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

"Every day is an opportunity to be better than yesterday, so excellence is a word that I can only work toward," Hines said. "I am so appreciative to Vestavia Hills City Schools for allowing me to be innovative and creative in my classroom, so that I can find better methods to reach my students and become a better educator every day. "

Hines will travel to Washington, D.C. this summer to be honored and will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

"I'm very excited about the trip to D.C.," Hines said. "The week will include celebratory functions, and the visit to the White House, but I'm most excited about the workshops and meetings with these other incredible educators and policy makers. I hope to learn strategies and initiatives that I can bring back to Vestavia to better prepare our students for an exciting world of ever-changing science and technology."
