The Vestavia Hills Fire Department responded to a commercial fire just off of Montgomery Highway early Saturday morning.

The call about the two-story structure at the 1900 block of Laurel Road came in around 12:45 a.m., and Lieutenant Ryan Farrell said when crews arrived the area was filled with heavy smoke.

Engines 1, 2 and 3 along with Ladder 1 and Rescue vehicles 30 and 34 and Battalion 1 responded to the call, and Farrell said the fire was largely out after about 40 minutes.

Farrell said there was one firefighter injured when a staircase collapsed as the crews were moving from the first floor to the second floor.

The firefighter has since been treated and released.
