Vestavia Hills City Schools issued an official statement confirming that three high school students were injured after encountering a live power line near the high school's practice football field.

An athletic department emergency action plan was initiated until first responders arrived. Fire Lt. Ryan Farrell said all three were transported through the fire department's paramedic unit to the hospital.

"Our immediate priority is the safety and well-being of our students and their families," said VCHS spokesperson Whit McGhee in a press release.

VHCS is working with the police department, fire department and local officials to determine the cause and the condition of the students.

McGhee said details of the investigation, including names of the three students, are not being released at this time. Future updates will be provided on the district's website, social media feeds and mobile apps.

"The Vestavia Hills City Schools Crisis Communication Team will continue working this evening and tomorrow to disseminate further information with the public," the release said.
