Vestavia Hills police have made two arrests in connection to a suspicious vehicle call turned manhunt from early Friday morning.

Lt. Kevin York with VHPD said police do not believe there was a third suspect, and they have both men connected to the case in custody. York also said police have recovered two stolen fire arms and a stolen vehicle the suspects were driving.

The case started around 1:45 a.m. when police received a call about a suspicious vehicle. When officers attempted to pull over the vehicle, two men got out of the car near Shades Crest Road and Big Springs Drive and fled. The suspects also fired shots at a Vestavia Hills police officer, who was not hit and did not return fire. York said the officer stuck around to help in the search for the suspects and to establish a perimeter.

York said the names of the suspects, two black males in their teens or early 20s, will not be released until charges are filed. Police have not released who will be charged with what, but York said the suspects could face multiple charges including attempted murder of a police officer, attempting to elude and possession of stolen property.

Several area departments assisted in the search, York said, including Hoover, Homewood, Mountain Brook and Pelham police departments as well as Jefferson County and Shelby County Sheriff's offices.

"It was a great effort of our patrol folks on the night shift who coordinate getting this assistance. They all came together and coordinated quickly and set up a perimeter which helped us capture the first suspect," York said.
