Suspect fires gun at SWAT members executing warrant

Midfield resident Gregory Beckwood, 26, is in custody at Jefferson County Jail on $227,000 bond following Vestavia Hills Police Department's execution of a narcotics search warrant.

The VHPD special investigations unit and tactical unit served the warrant in the 500 block of 10th Avenue in Midfield. When SWAT was entering the residence, Beckwood fired a gun. He was subdued by police.

Investigators obtained warrants for Beckwood on multiple charges, including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, ex-felon in possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property second degree, unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and four counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance (heroin).

Beckwood was booked at Jefferson County Jail on July 31 at 8:52 a.m.
