The members of the 2016-2020 Vestavia Hills City Council will formally take office Monday night in an official investiture ceremony, with the council's first major organizational meeting to follow.

At 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber of City Hall, mayor-elect Ashley Curry and councilors-elect Rusty Weaver, Kimberly Cook, Paul Head and George Pierce will take the oath of office to begin their terms.

After the swearing-in, the new council will vote to elect a mayor pro tempore, as well as appoint the city attorney, city clerk, city treasurer, municipal judge, municipal prosecutor and indigent defenders.

The council will also vote to decide the when and where of future city council meetings. During the last term, meetings were held at 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of the month. During the campaign, multiple candidates, including returning councilor Pierce, indicated that they wanted to move the time to later in the day to allow for more citizens to attend.

The meeting is open to the public, and citizens are invited to join the new council and city staff for a reception to honor the new members.
