Man faces more than $1 million in bond after drug charges

Vestavia Hills Police Department served a narcotics warrant on Aug. 19, resulting in the arrest of Birmingham resident Derrick Alexander, 32.

Heroin, marijuana, prescription drugs, drug paraphernalia and firearms were discovered at the apartment, located in the 3200 block of Ave. S in Birmingham.

Alexander was arrested on scene and transported to Vestavia Hills City Jail. Investigators obtained warrants for several charges, including trafficking in heroin, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, alteration of manufacturer's number of a firearm, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of marijuana and two counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.

The charges for drug paraphernalia and marijuana possession are misdemeanor charges. Alexander was transferred to Jefferson County Jail pending a total bond of $1,070,600. Birmingham police also assisted on scene.
