Fall consignment sales return to the Hills

by

Area churches are promising brand name merchandise at bargain prices as they gear up for their Fall Consignment Sales.

At Whale of a Sale, demand is driven by boutique-brand infant and children’s clothing, shoes and accessories, which are consigned by 150 different individuals and result in a total approximate inventory of 15,000 items.

“Of course we have shoppers from Over the Mountain and cities just outside Birmingham, but we’ve also found loyal supporters outside the state,” said Whale of a Sale committee member Lauren Hayes. “We even have a mother and daughter duo who drive over from Atlanta each year to volunteer and setup.”

Hayes added that the bargains are well worth a long drive, and in some cases, an even longer wait in line.

“We have shoppers line up three hours before we open the doors,” she said, adding that many of the sale’s supporters have found it time well spent. “At one of our most recent sales, we had a fellow come in saying his newborn had arrived the day before and that he was not prepared. For $100, he walked out with a crib, a car seat, a Pack ‘n Play and everything else he needed.”

Whale of a Sale typically generates $15,000 in revenue, which benefits the children’s ministries of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church, including the Vestavia Day School. Unsold merchandise designated for donation is delivered to Oak Mountain Missions.
