Council to vote on pedestrian bridge project, Crosshaven rezoning

The Vestavia Hills City Council will meet Monday to discuss several major development projects.

The first item of business will involve the proposed pedestrian bridge over U.S. 31, which would connect Wald Park and the Library in the Forest.

The resolution would authorize the city's portion of the project's funding, up to $190,000.

A cash commitment by the council would push the project, which has been stalled for several years, into the next stage of development.

The council will also consider a request to rezone six lots on Crosshaven Drive, changing the zoning from R-1 residential to B-1.2 mixed-use commercial. The property owners are requesting the lots be rezoned so the roughly 2.5 acres can be developed into a multi-purpose retail and restaurant complex, anchored by a Leaf & Petal garden shop.

Multiple residents have spoken out about the proposed rezoning, including several who sent letters to the Planning and Zoning Commission, which unanimously approved the development.

In addition to the two major items of business, the council will also discuss amending the city's fence ordinance, a resolution formally expressing support for State Constitution Amendment 14 up for a vote on Nov. 8 and a 15-foot Alagasco easement in a portion of the city located in Shelby County.  

The Council will also discuss whether or not to invoke the city's drought ordinance, after the Birmingham Water Works Board issued a Stage-3 Drought Warning on Wednesday.

The meeting will take place at 5 p.m. in the council chamber of City Hall at 1032 Montgomery Highway.
