Council meeting to discuss budget, canvass votes

The Vestavia Hills City Council will have two special meetings in the next week, one to discuss the budget for the 2017 Fiscal Year, and the other to officially canvass the votes from the Aug. 23 municipal election.

At its Aug. 22 meeting, the sitting council decided to postpone any vote on the upcoming year's budget in order to include any new council members that were to be elected the next day. The council also set a special work session for Monday, Aug. 29 to go over the budget with sitting and future council members to get as much input as possible.

Mayor Butch Zaragoza said at the Aug. 22 meeting that this was the council's decision, and does not reflect on City Manager Jeff Downes' fulfillment of his responsibility to present a budget.

The special work session will take place at 6 p.m. in the Executive Conference Room at City Hall.

The council will also meet on Tuesday, Aug. 30 to officially canvass the votes of the recent municipal election. This action is required by state law, and elections results will not be official until the process is complete.

The canvassing meeting will take place at noon in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

Vestavia Hills City Hall is located at 1032 Montgomery Highway. For more information on the upcoming public meetings, contact City Clerk Rebecca Leavings at 978-0184.
