Council discusses Zaxby's in Cahaba Heights, demolition of Great Rock Road property

During Monday night's meeting, the City Council approved several resolutions concerning local properties.

3207 Bearden Court

The council approved the rezoning of a portion of 3207 Bearden Court from a residential to a business district. Zaxby's, a franchised chain of fast casual restaurants offering chicken wings, chicken fingers, sandwiches and salads, is currently planned for the site.

 During a public hearing, residents expressed concerns of increased traffic flow in the area. However, the council stated it would work well in the community.

"I think this matches well with the Cahaba Heights long range plan," said Councilman Jim Sharp.

2253 Great Rock Road

In other news, the council approved a resolution ordering the demolition of the building located at 2253 Great Rock Road.

During the meeting, Attorney Ben Goldman with the law firm of Hand Arendall LLC presented the council with photographs taken on the property and within the home. He stated that on July 14, Building Official Keith Blanton and Fire Marshal Greg Gilchrist verified the property as a public nuisance and that the amount of material found inside the home was a fire hazard.

During a public hearing, neighbors described "horrific odors" coming from the home and stated their concerns dated back to 2003.

"This is a sad situation," Goldman said. "The scope of the work needed to repair the structure is significant. The city has been attempting to work with the homeowner for years."
