Council discusses Wald Park, urban hens
During tonight's City Council meeting, the council discussed the first phase of the Wald Park Planning Project and gave conditional use approval to a resident for urban hens.
The council approved a resolution authorizing an agreement with Goodwyn Mills and Cawood for preliminary geotechnical work at Wald Park for a total of $11,500. The scope of work includes investigation of the subsurface conditions of the city-owned property of Wald Park and Public Works buildings on U.S. 31.
"We are looking at what could happen on the site to leverage our sports facilities," said City Manager Jeff Downes. "This is the beginning of a long process."
The council also gave conditional use approval to resident Will Roth for up to 12 urban hens at his home on Altadena Road. This is the second resident to receive conditional use approval from the city for urbans hens.
Several neighbors voiced concern about the hens attracting predators such as coyotes and foxes. Councilman George Pierce echoed their concerns.
"The last thing we need is something attracting more predators to our city, " Councilman George Pierce said.
Councilman Steve Ammons stated that neighbors are encouraged to alert police if there is an increase in predators due to the urban hens.
In other news, the council:
- Declared August 2014 "Vestavia Hills Firefighters Appreciation Month."
- Announced that Aug. 1-3 will be a sales tax holiday in Vestavia Hills.
- Authorized an agreement with ALDOT for landscape improvements at the intersection of Interstate 65 and Highway 31
The next council meeting will be held Monday, Aug. 11.
